Volley

VOLLEYS

I told you I'd be breaking down all the strokes to tennis! We've already covered the basic forehand and backhand, now we're jumping into volleys! A volley in tennis is a shot in which the ball is struck before it bounces on the ground. Generally a player hits a volley while standing near the net, although it can be executed farther back, in the middle of the tennis court or even near the baseline. The primary objective of the volley is to go on the offensive and cut the amount of time for the opponent to react. Another advantage is that a player eliminates any possibility of a bad bounce from an uneven surface such as on some grass and clay courts. Also, if near the net, a volleyer has a wider choice of angles to hit into the opponent's court. However, quick reflexes and hand-eye coordination are required to execute this shot.

Backhand

THE BACKHAND

The backhand is a tennis shot in which one swings the racquet around one's body in the direction where one wants the ball to go, usually performed from the baseline or as an approach shot. The term is also used in other racquet sports, and other areas where a similar motion is employed (for example while throwing a sport disc). For a right-handed player, this means that a backhand begins on the left side of the body, continues across the body as contact is made with the ball, and ends on the right side of the body, with the racquet over the left shoulder. The backhand can be a one-handed or two-handed stroke.

THE FOREHAND

The forehand in tennis and other racket sports such as table tennis, squash and badminton is a shot made by swinging the racquet across one's body in the direction of where the player wants to place the shot. For a right-handed player, the forehand is a stroke that begins on the right side of his body, continues across his body as contact is made with the ball, and ends on the left side of his body. It is considered the easiest shot to master, perhaps because it is the most natural stroke. Beginners and advanced players often have better forehands than any other shots and use it as a weapon.

There's parts to a tennis racquet?

Yes there are! Today, I'll inform you on the different parts of the tennis racquet. This is going to be your "right hand man" if you're going to play tennis! Get to know the parts of your racquet, the specialities it provides, and you'll for sure do much better. Just like clothes, there are brands of tennis racquets, some better than others. There's Wilson, Head, Babolat, etc .. For starters we'll go over the parts of the tennis racquet, provided in the diagram below:

The frame of the racquet is very important, without it, you'd have no racquet! It holds everything together.

The head is the part of the racquet you use to hit the ball.
Inside the head is the "brain", the strings. The strings are also very important as well. You never want your strings to be loose, always tight.
The throat holds up the head
The handle also known as the grip is of course where you hold the racquet securely.
The butt of the racquet is the bottom of the grip.

BABOLAT
These racquets range in price and are usually expensive, but they're GREAT racquets. The also come in different colors, the make is usually the same.

Wilson
This is an example of a Wilson racquet, they come in many different colors, and makes as well. These racquets are reasonably priced.

Head
These are Head racquets which are my favorite actually. They are also reasonably priced, most of my racquets are of this brand.

Let's learn the parts of the tennis court!

Above I have placed a diagram of the tennis court with the different names that go with certain points on the court. During the summer I worked with children between the ages of 6-16. Many of the younger children I felt needed to be introduced to the parts of the court before they actual got into playing the game of tennis. It is very important that you know the parts of the court in order to play an effective game of tennis. For the most part, the children were able to grasp the positions on one side of the court and transition that knowledge to the other side of the court for they both are the same just in different angles.

Baseline: The baseline is where all serving will be done. You must always stand behind the baseline before serving or you will create what we call in the tennis world a "foot fault".

Center mark: The center mark helps with understanding what side of the court you are to serve from. You must be on one side of the center mark in order to serve. The center mark also helps when playing doubles. It helps both players know there limitations in space.

No man's Land: YOU NEVER WANT TO BE THERE! No mans land when I was growing up and being taught the game of tennis was a place you never wanted to be. It's a very difficult spot to receive and return shots.

Singles sideline: This line indicates whether or not balls are in or out. If within the lines you're ball is in, if outside into the doubles ally, your ball is out during singles.

Doubles sideline: For this sideline anything within the singles and doubles sideline are in during doubles anything outside the court and doubles sideline is deemed out.

Service line: The service line shows the cut off as to where your serve should be. The service line essentially creates the bottom of a box and you must always keep your serves within that box.

Right & Left Service Court: These are the other parts of the box in which your serves must land. When serving from the right side of the baseline your serve must land in the left service court. When serving from the left side of the baseline, your serve must land in the right service court.

HOPE THAT HELPS!

Tennis spotlight!

I started playing tennis when I was around the age of 7 at a local tennis camp that many of my family members attended for years and established a name for themselves. It was "necessary" that I too learn how to play tennis, and Sportsmans Tennis Club was my introduction to the world of tennis that I would soon learn to love. In addition to learning how to play tennis I also became very interested in it as a whole, looking into the skills of different players. SO this week, I have decided to put the spotlight on two of my favorite tennis players. I decided to pick a both a female and a male just to have a balance. My favorite female tennis player would have to be, of course, Serena Williams! My favorite male tennis player is Roger Federer.

Serena Williams
BornSeptember 26, 1981 (age 31)
Weight155 lbs (70 kg)
Height5' 9" (1.75 m)
Serena Williams' performance is like no other! It's always amazing to watch her play. Every match that she plays she plays like it's her first and her career depends on it, and it just shows her dedication to the game. If she wanted to she could stop, but she decides to continue for the love of the game.

BornAugust 8, 1981 (age 32)
Height6' 1" (1.85 m)
I love to watch Roger Federer because he's a strong tennis player, and he makes it look so effortless. Most people have a hard time getting their backhands (don't worry, I'll explain later) down and he's able to hit a one hand backhand, and with precision, and strength, it's amazing!

Hello, it's our first time meeting!

Hello, my name is Brianna Burke and in my Public Relations Writing class we have been asked to set up blogs centered around something you really like to do, or you enjoy.  For years I’ve loved to play tennis, so I decided to focus my blog on just that, tennis! If you didn’t understand the title of this blog, “Game. Set. Match!” you might not be familiar with what it will be about, of course, but don’t worry, you will after this blog! It might seem a bit boring to a lot of people, but I’m actually really intrigued by the sport! I’ll be giving you background from what the parts of the tennis racquet are to how to play the game of tennis, covering all bases in regards to tennis so you get the full understanding. I’m happy to share what I love to do, I hope to spark some type of interest in the sport for you all, and I hope you enjoy learning something different.
